Pixel 9a screen protectors: clear glass, and why privacy film is the wrong choice

The Pixel 9a is not a smaller Pixel 9, and the difference that matters for a screen protector is the fingerprint sensor.

The short answer. Buy clear tempered glass cut for the Pixel 9a specifically. The 9a has a 6.3-inch screen in a 154.7 × 73.3 × 8.9 mm body and reads your fingerprint optically, unlike the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and later, which are ultrasonic. Optical sensors tolerate slightly thicker glass but fail under privacy, tinted and heavily matte film, so clear glass is the safe choice.

Fit

The Pixel 9a needs its own protector

The Pixel 9a has a 6.3-inch display in a body measuring 154.7 × 73.3 × 8.9 mm. The Pixel 9 is a different size again, so a protector for one will not sit correctly on the other. Buy the one whose listing names the 9a.

Check the cut-outs too: a protector made for a Pixel with an ultrasonic sensor may be printed or coated differently over the sensor area.

Fingerprint sensor

Optical: thickness is fine, tint is not

The 9a reads your fingerprint optically — the display lights your finger and the sensor photographs the reflection. That means:

The Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL use ultrasonic sensors instead, which is why advice written for them does not transfer. After fitting anything, delete your saved fingerprints and enrol them again with the glass on.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best screen protector for the Pixel 9a?

Clear tempered glass cut specifically for the Pixel 9a, ideally with an alignment frame and adhesive across the whole surface. Avoid privacy and tinted film, which interferes with the optical fingerprint sensor.

Does a Pixel 9 screen protector fit the Pixel 9a?

No. The two phones have different bodies, so buy the protector whose listing names the Pixel 9a.

Does the Pixel 9a have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor?

No. The Pixel 9a uses an optical under-display sensor. The Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL use ultrasonic sensors.

Why did my Pixel 9a fingerprint stop working after fitting a protector?

Optical sensors fail most often under privacy, tinted or heavily matte film. Re-enrol your fingerprint with the protector fitted; if that does not fix it, switch to clear glass.

Does the Pixel 9a need a screen protector?

It is a personal call, but the 9a is a mid-range phone whose screen is the expensive part to repair, and a protector costs a fraction of that. Clear glass changes nothing about how the phone looks or feels.
