iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: identical in size to the 17 Pro, which changes what you should buy

The short answer. Both new Pro models match the previous generation exactly: the iPhone 18 Pro is 150.0 mm × 71.9 mm × 8.75 mm, the same as the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 163.4 mm × 78.0 mm × 8.75 mm, the same as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. So a well-reviewed iPhone 17 Pro protector is a stronger bet than a brand-new iPhone 18 Pro listing with no history behind it — the phone does not ship until September 18, 2026, so no star rating on any iPhone 18 Pro listing can yet describe use on the device it is sold for.

If you want a protector on day one, buy a full-adhesive glass with an alignment tray and confirm the manufacturer names your exact model. If you can wait a few weeks, wait for real reviews.

This trips people up, so it is worth being exact. Apple has announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It has not announced a standard iPhone 18. Reporting places the non-Pro model, along with an iPhone 18e and a second iPhone Air, in spring 2027 — but as of today those are unannounced, and we are not going to describe unreleased phones as though you can buy protectors for them.

So if you are searching for an "iPhone 18 screen protector" and you have just bought a new iPhone, you almost certainly have a Pro or Pro Max. Check Settings, or the back of the box, before ordering anything — the two sizes take different protectors and are not interchangeable.

The standing advice on this site is never to assume an older protector fits a new phone, because matching screen diagonals prove nothing on their own — contours, cutouts and sensor placement all matter. That advice is right in general. Here, having actually checked Apple's own specification pages, the dimensions come out the same:

This has a practical consequence that most launch-week coverage misses. Protectors sold for the iPhone 17 Pro have had a year in the market and carry real review histories from people who actually fitted them. Protectors sold for the iPhone 18 Pro carry none. Given an identical footprint, the older listing is often the better-evidenced purchase.

Better evidence than the measurements: the manufacturers say so themselves. Spigen, Ailun, ESR each sell a single protector listed for both generations at once — one is titled "Screen Protector for iPhone 18 Pro, 17 Pro, 17, 16 Pro", another "for iPhone 18 Pro/iPhone 17 Pro". Matching dimensions are an inference we are drawing. A cross-listing is a compatibility claim the manufacturer has made, with returns liability attached, and three brands make it independently.

Two caveats we are not going to gloss over. Identical external dimensions are strong evidence of fit but not a guarantee — bezel curvature and the exact earpiece slot position are not published figures, and only the manufacturer can confirm compatibility. And Apple describes a "Redesigned Dynamic Island" on the new models; the Dynamic Island sits inside the active display area rather than being a cutout, so it should not affect how a full-cover protector sits, but a protector whose printed border is cut for the older layout may look very slightly different.

What to do: if you buy an iPhone 17 Pro protector for an 18 Pro, buy from a seller with a returns window and check the fit around the earpiece and the bottom edge before peeling the second liner.

Apple states the new Pro models have "Ceramic Shield 2 front with 3x better scratch resistance than iPhone 16 Pro". That is Apple's claim, it is relative rather than absolute, and the comparison point is the iPhone 16 Pro rather than last year's 17 Pro.

Take it seriously — cover glass has genuinely improved, and Apple has independent reason to be careful with a measurable claim. But read what it does and does not say. Better scratch resistance is not scratch immunity, and the underlying materials problem has not moved: phone cover glass sits around 6 on the Mohs scale, and the quartz that makes up most sand and a good share of household dust sits at 7. Harder scratches softer. A beach trip will still mark the glass, three times more resistant or not.

What the improvement genuinely changes is the everyday case — pocket lint, a desk, a coin brushing past. Those were never the real threat. For drops, the case matters more.

These are research-based recommendations. Nobody here has handled an iPhone 18 Pro protector, because the phone ships on September 18, 2026. We are not going to tell you we tested them.

• Verified the device facts against Apple's own specification pages, recorded below with source links, on 2026-09-12.
• Pulled current listings from Amazon through Amazon's official product interface, and checked each one is genuinely available in this market rather than assuming the US catalogue transfers.
• Treated ratings as unusable here. Our product source does not return rating data, so we will not quote counts either way — and in launch week a rating could not describe this phone regardless, since nobody has owned one. Where a listing covers several generations at once we say so, because that is where a borrowed reputation would come from.
• Prioritised on specification, not on commission: full-surface adhesive over edge-only glue, an alignment tray in the box, an anti-reflective coating on camera protectors, and explicit naming of your exact model.

We have deliberately not ranked these one to eight. With no fitting data and no wear data, a numbered ranking would imply a confidence we do not have. They are grouped by what they suit instead.

• Full-surface adhesive. The single most important spec, and doubly so on a phone with Face ID and a redesigned Dynamic Island: edge-only glue leaves an air gap that shows as a rainbow shimmer across the middle of the display.
• An alignment tray. On a launch-week fitting with no YouTube guides yet for your exact model, the tray is what stops a crooked application. Worth more than any hardness figure.
• Thickness of 0.25–0.33 mm. iPhone has no under-display fingerprint reader, so the thickness constraint that matters on Android phones does not apply here — but thicker glass still fouls cases and feels worse.
• Correct cutouts for your exact model. Face ID reads from the sensor array at the top of the display. A protector cut for a different iPhone can leave that area partly obscured, and unlocking gets unreliable in low light before it fails outright.

Ignore "9H". Every listing in this category claims it, which makes it useless for choosing, and it is a pencil-hardness grade rather than a Mohs figure — it does not mean the glass cannot scratch or break.
