The argument for a protector is arithmetic, not fear — but the numbers have to be yours, not ours.
The short answer. A protector costs a small fraction of any screen repair, so the sum almost always favours fitting one. We do not quote repair prices, because they change and they differ by model, state and provider — get your own figure from Apple’s repair estimate tool or Samsung support, then compare. Be clear on what you are buying, though: glass protects against scratches and some impacts, not against a bad drop onto a corner.
Before comparing anything, find out which of these applies to you:
Whichever applies, the protector is the smallest number in the comparison by a wide margin.
Tempered glass takes scratches instead of your display and spreads some impact energy. It does not make a phone drop-proof: a corner impact loads the frame and the display, and a protector cannot change that. A case with a raised lip does more for drop survival than any protector.
It is also consumable. A protector that has cracked has done its job and needs replacing — budget for that rather than treating it as a one-off. Our do you need one guide covers the cases where the answer is no.

Financially, almost always: a protector costs a small fraction of any screen repair, whether that is an out-of-warranty price, an AppleCare+ or Samsung Care+ service fee, or a third-party repair. Get your own quote from Apple or Samsung and compare.
It depends on model, provider and where you live, so we do not publish figures that would go stale. Apple and Samsung both offer estimate tools for your exact model.
Not reliably. It absorbs scratches and some impact, but a corner drop loads the frame and display directly. A case with a raised lip does more for drop survival.
No — that is the protector doing its job. It is a consumable item and should be replaced once cracked.
