The XL is not a bigger 9 Pro in the way that matters here: it is a different size of glass, on the sensor type that is easiest to break.
The short answer. Buy thin, clear tempered glass listed for the Pixel 9 Pro XL itself. Its 6.8-inch display sits in a 162.8 × 76.6 × 8.5 mm body with a Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front, and it reads fingerprints ultrasonically — so thick glass, edge-only adhesive and privacy film are the three things that cause failed reads. We found no protector listed for both the 9 Pro and the 9 Pro XL.
The Pixel 9 Pro XL is 162.8 × 76.6 × 8.5 mm with a 6.8-inch screen. The Pixel 9 Pro is a 6.3-inch phone in a much smaller body, and none of the listings we checked claims to fit both. Buy the one that names the XL.
An ultrasonic reader sends sound through whatever covers it, so the rules are the opposite of the optical sensors in Google's a-series:
Re-enrol your fingerprints once the glass is on. Our fingerprint sensor guide covers both sensor types.
The Pixel hub lists every current model. For the optical-sensor models, see Pixel 9a and Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a, or our sensor-by-model guide.

Thin, clear tempered glass listed for the 9 Pro XL, with adhesive across the whole surface rather than only the edges, and ideally a listing that mentions ultrasonic fingerprint compatibility.
No. The XL has a 6.8-inch screen in a 162.8 × 76.6 × 8.5 mm body, much larger than the 6.3-inch Pixel 9 Pro, and no listing we checked covers both.
Ultrasonic sensors are defeated by thick glass, air gaps from edge-only adhesive and privacy film. Re-enrol your fingerprints with the protector fitted; if it still fails, the glass is the wrong type.
