Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a screen protectors: three sizes, one optical fingerprint sensor

The Pixel 8 series is still widely used, and its protector advice differs from newer Pixels in one important way: all three models read your fingerprint optically.

The short answer. Buy clear tempered glass cut for your exact model: the Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a each need their own, and we found no protector listed for more than one of them. All three use an optical under-display fingerprint reader, which copes with slightly thicker glass but struggles under tinted, privacy and heavily matte films.

Sizes

Three phones, three protectors

The Pixel 8 and 8a look close on paper, but the 8a’s body is taller and wider and its screen is smaller, so a protector for one will not sit correctly on the other. None of the listings we checked claims to fit both.

Fingerprint sensor

Optical: tint matters more than thickness

All three read your fingerprint with an optical sensor that lights your finger with the display and photographs the reflection. Slightly thicker glass is usually fine; privacy filters, tinted glass and heavy matte finishes are what cause failed reads, because they block or scatter that light.

This is the opposite of the Pixel 9 and later, which moved to ultrasonic sensors. Our Pixel fingerprint sensor guide explains both.

After fitting any protector, delete your saved fingerprints and enrol them again with the glass on.

Privacy films

If you want a privacy protector anyway

Privacy protectors for all three models are widely sold. Expect a dimmer screen and a higher chance of failed fingerprint reads on these optical sensors. Face unlock is an alternative if fingerprint unlock becomes unreliable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best screen protector for the Pixel 8?

Clear tempered glass cut specifically for the Pixel 8, ideally with an alignment frame and adhesive across the whole surface. Avoid privacy and heavily tinted films, which interfere with the optical fingerprint sensor.

Does a Pixel 8 screen protector fit the Pixel 8a?

No. The 8a has a smaller 6.1-inch screen in a taller, wider body than the 6.2-inch Pixel 8, and none of the listings we checked claims to fit both.

Does the Pixel 8 Pro have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor?

No. The Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a all use optical under-display sensors. Google moved to ultrasonic sensors with the Pixel 9.

Why did my Pixel 8 fingerprint stop working after fitting a protector?

Optical sensors fail most often under privacy, tinted or heavy matte films. Try re-enrolling your fingerprint with the protector on; if that does not help, a clear glass protector is the fix.
