iPhone Duo: protect the outer screen, and leave the folding one alone

The short answer. Protect the outer 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR cover screen with ordinary tempered glass cut for this exact model. Put nothing rigid on the 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display. Apple gives that panel a "custom nano-texture finish that reduces glare", so even a flexible glossy film would undo an anti-glare surface you paid for.

We are recommending no inner-screen product at all. Not a cautious pick, not a "best of a bad bunch" — nothing.

Start with the mechanics, because they set the rule. Glass does not bend. A folding display does, tens of thousands of times. A sheet of tempered glass on the inner panel of a foldable cracks at the first fold, and in the worst case the fracturing sheet takes the display's soft top layer with it.

To be accurate about what is on sale: we did not find anyone shipping rigid glass for the fold. Every inner-screen listing we inspected uses flexible film — TPU, EPU or hydrogel — and one says "(Not Tempered Glass)" in its own title. The tempered glass in those kits is for the back or the outer screen.

The problem is the labelling. A typical title reads "Inner Screen Protector for iPhone Duo, Tempered Glass Back", and another "Inner Screen Protectors for iPhone Duo, Tempered Glass Back". Skim either and you have read "inner screen" and "tempered glass" as one phrase. These are multi-piece kits, so a buyer who misreads the title is holding the glass that would do the damage, with nothing in the packaging to stop them applying it to the wrong panel.

Here is the part that makes the Duo different from other foldables, and it is easy to miss. Apple describes the inner display as having a "custom nano-texture finish that reduces glare".

That is a factory anti-glare treatment on the panel itself. It is the same situation as an etched-glass handheld console: the diffusion is built into the surface, so covering it with any glossy layer — rigid or flexible — replaces a matte anti-reflective finish with a mirror. You would be paying to remove a feature.

So on the inner display the case for fitting anything is weaker than on a normal foldable, not stronger. Apple also lists a "scratch-resistant coating on the inner display" and Ceramic Shield, front and back on the exterior.

One listing makes the conflict concrete. A privacy hydrogel film sold for the Duo's inner folding display advertises that it "blocks the display from side angles beyond around 30 degrees". Doing that requires a tint-and-louvre layer, laid directly over the anti-glare finish Apple built into the panel. The film is flexible, so it will survive folding — it will simply undo what you paid for.

The 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display is a conventional rigid screen and takes a conventional protector. It is also the one genuinely worth covering, because it is the surface exposed when the phone sits folded in a pocket alongside keys.

Two checks specific to a folding phone. The protector must not stand proud of the frame, or the device will not close flat and the overhang loads the hinge. And the cutouts must match this exact model — on a folding design the camera and sensor placement on the cover screen is particular to the phone, and a protector cut for anything else will sit wrong.

The iPhone Duo is not released until 23 October 2026, with pre-orders from 16 October 2026. That means:

• No fit has been verified by anyone. Every protector listed for this phone is pre-release. None of the listings we checked carried any reviews.
• We have not handled the phone or any protector for it. Everything here is drawn from Apple's published specifications and from the listings themselves.
• Whether Apple ships a pre-applied inner film is not stated on the pages we checked. On other foldables the factory inner film is part of the panel and must not be peeled off by the user. If the Duo follows that pattern, the same rule applies — but we are flagging it as unconfirmed rather than asserting it.

We will revisit this page once the phone is in buyers' hands. Until then the outer-screen advice is safe and the inner-screen advice is "nothing".
