Foldable phone screen protectors: what to buy for the outside, and what to leave alone inside

Every foldable is two screens with opposite rules, and most of the bad advice online treats them as one.

The short answer. Fit ordinary tempered glass to the cover screen — it is rigid glass like any phone, and it is the surface exposed in a pocket. Fit nothing rigid to the folding inner display: it is plastic, it bends, and it already carries a factory film that is part of the panel. If you want something on the inside, flexible film is the only option, and leaving it bare is a perfectly good answer.

Two screens

Why one phone needs two different answers

The cover screen is conventional cover glass — Gorilla Glass on the Samsung and Pixel foldables, Ceramic Shield 2 on the iPhone Duo. It behaves like any phone screen and takes a normal protector.

The folding display cannot. Glass does not bend through hundreds of thousands of cycles, so the inner screen is plastic with a factory-applied film bonded on top as part of the assembly. Rigid glass fitted there cracks on the first fold and can lift the soft top layer with it.

The factory film

The part people damage by accident

That inner film looks like the transport film on a new phone, and peeling it is the single most expensive mistake foldable owners make. It is not packaging. If it bubbles or lifts at the crease, raise it with the manufacturer rather than pulling it off.

Our inner screen film page covers what happens next, and the foldable guide answers the common questions.

What differs between the foldables

Watch the titles: several listings sold as "inner screen protector" are bundles whose tempered glass is for the back of the phone, not the fold.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a screen protector on a foldable phone?

On the cover screen, yes — it is ordinary rigid glass and takes a normal tempered glass protector. On the folding inner display, only flexible film is possible, and it already has a factory film bonded to it.

Can you put tempered glass on a folding screen?

No. Glass cannot bend, so it cracks at the first fold and can damage the soft top layer of the display as it goes.

Should you remove the factory screen protector on a foldable?

No. It is part of the display assembly, not packaging. If it lifts or bubbles at the crease, treat it as a warranty matter with the manufacturer.

Which foldable screen actually needs protecting?

The cover screen. It is the surface exposed to keys and coins in a pocket, while the inner display is protected by being folded away.

Why do some foldable protector listings include tempered glass?

Because the glass in those bundles is usually for the back of the phone or the cover screen, not the fold. Read the contents line before applying anything.
