Blue light protectors do filter blue wavelengths — that part is straightforward optics. Whether that filtering delivers the benefits attached to it in marketing is a much weaker claim than most listings imply, and worth understanding before you spend.
A blue light protector carries a coating or tint that absorbs part of the short-wavelength end of the visible spectrum — roughly the 400–490 nm range. Removing some blue from white light shifts the balance toward yellow, which is why these protectors give the screen a warmer cast.
Filtering strength varies widely and is often not disclosed. A protector claiming to block “up to 90%” is usually quoting its peak at one narrow wavelength, not across the band — a genuine 90% cut across the whole blue range would leave the display markedly and unmistakably orange.
Two claims are usually attached to these products. They are not on equal footing.
Eye strain. This is the weaker of the two. A Cochrane systematic review published in 2023, examining randomised trials of blue-light filtering spectacle lenses, found no meaningful evidence that they reduce eye strain from computer use compared with ordinary lenses. That review looked at lenses rather than screen protectors, but the proposed mechanism is the same, and it is the most rigorous evidence available. Digital eye strain appears to be driven mostly by reduced blink rate, sustained focus at a fixed distance, and screen brightness relative to the room — none of which a filter addresses.
Sleep. This has a better grounding. Light exposure in the evening — particularly short-wavelength light — does influence melatonin and circadian timing, and that is well established in laboratory settings. Whether a phone filter meaningfully changes sleep outcomes in ordinary use is much less settled, and total screen brightness and how late you use the device plausibly matter more than spectral composition.
Every current phone, tablet and computer includes a built-in blue-light reduction mode — Night Shift on Apple devices, Night Light on Android and Windows. These shift the display’s colour temperature in software, and they have three clear advantages over a protector.
They are free. They are adjustable, so you can set the strength you want. And they are scheduled, so filtering happens in the evening when the sleep argument applies and switches off during the day when it does not.
A physical filter cannot be turned off. If your interest is the sleep claim, a permanent daytime tint is the wrong tool for a night-time problem.
You prefer a warmer screen and want it always on. Some people simply find a warmer display more comfortable and dislike remembering to schedule software. That is a legitimate preference, and a tinted protector delivers it permanently.
You need protection anyway. If you were buying tempered glass regardless, a version with a blue-light tint costs little more. The filtering is then a side benefit rather than the reason for the purchase, which is the right way round.
When not to buy: if you do any colour-critical work, if you already use Night Shift or Night Light and are happy, or if you are buying specifically to fix eye strain — the evidence does not support that, and adjusting brightness, taking breaks and getting your eyes checked will do more.
