A privacy protector genuinely works — the person beside you on the train really cannot read your screen. It also takes a substantial bite out of your own display, and that half of the trade is rarely mentioned at the point of sale.
Sandwiched inside the protector is a layer of microlouvres — thousands of parallel, near-vertical walls, each far too small to see. Light leaving your display straight ahead passes between them. Light heading off at an angle hits the side of a louvre and is absorbed.
The effect is a viewing cone, typically around 60 degrees total — roughly 30 either side of straight-on. Inside it, the screen looks normal. Outside it, the screen goes dark. It is the same principle as a Venetian blind, executed at a scale you cannot resolve with the naked eye.
Nothing is being encrypted or hidden in software. This is a purely optical trick, and it is the reason the trade-off below is unavoidable rather than a flaw in cheap products.
Every photon absorbed by a louvre is a photon that never reaches your eye. A privacy filter therefore makes your own screen noticeably dimmer — users commonly describe needing to raise brightness substantially to compensate, which in turn costs battery.
Where this really bites is outdoors. A phone already struggling in direct sun, now passing through a filter designed to absorb off-axis light, can become genuinely hard to read. If you work outside, this is close to a disqualifying problem.
Two more costs worth knowing. The louvre layer adds thickness and structure between your fingertip and an under-display fingerprint sensor, and privacy films are among the most common causes of sensor failure on ultrasonic phones. And because the filter is directional, you lose the ability to share your screen — handing your phone across a table to show someone a photo stops working.
Two-way filters block the left and right viewing angles only. Someone beside you sees black; someone standing behind you sees your screen perfectly. These are the common, cheaper option and they suit the seat-next-to-you scenario — planes, trains, open-plan desks.
Four-way filters block above and below as well. They matter if the realistic threat is someone standing behind you — a queue, a shared counter, a bus you are standing on. They cost more light, because they are absorbing in more directions.
Decide which one your actual situation calls for before buying. Most people who buy four-way did not need it and simply gave up more brightness than necessary.
You use the phone outdoors a lot. The combined loss from sunlight and the filter is the single most common regret in this category.
You have an ultrasonic fingerprint reader. Unless the manufacturer explicitly lists your model as compatible, expect problems.
You watch or edit media. The filter costs brightness, some colour accuracy, and all of your off-axis viewing.
You share your screen often. Photos, directions, showing a colleague a document — all become awkward.
If your concern is a specific setting rather than all day, consider that most phones and laptops now ship a software privacy or screen-shield mode for exactly this, at no optical cost.
