On most phones, fitting a privacy protector is a straightforward trade of brightness for discretion. On a Samsung Galaxy flagship it is also a bet on whether your fingerprint reader will keep working — and it is a bet most privacy films lose.
Our general privacy protector guide tells you to check that the listing names your model. On a Galaxy flagship that advice is too soft, because the failure here is not occasional — it is close to the default outcome.
Samsung's S-series flagships use an ultrasonic fingerprint reader rather than the optical type found in most other phones. An optical sensor takes a photograph of your finger using light from the display, and tolerates an extra transparent layer reasonably well. An ultrasonic sensor sends a pulse of sound through the glass, reads the echo off the ridges of your fingertip, and needs a continuous, uninterrupted medium to do it.
A privacy filter is the opposite of that. It is a structured layer of microscopic louvres — thousands of tiny walls with gaps between them — deliberately built to interrupt what passes through. Sound does not cross that cleanly, and neither the louvres nor the extra thickness can be engineered away without giving up the privacy effect itself.
The answer differs within Samsung's own range, which is why a blanket "Samsung privacy screen" search is unhelpful.
S-series flagships have used ultrasonic readers for several generations. These are the models where privacy films cause the most trouble.
A-series and budget models more commonly use optical under-display readers, or a fingerprint sensor mounted in the side power button. A side-mounted reader is not under the screen at all, so a privacy protector cannot interfere with it — and on those models the normal privacy trade-offs apply and nothing more.
Check your model's specification before you buy anything. If your reader is in the power button, ignore the rest of this warning. If it is under the display and your phone is an S-series flagship, assume ultrasonic.
If your concern is specific situations rather than all day, it is worth knowing that a physical filter is a permanent solution to an occasional problem — and it costs you brightness, and possibly your fingerprint reader, at every other moment.
Modern Galaxy software includes screen-privacy behaviour for notifications and sensitive content, and lowering brightness in a crowded space is free and instantly reversible. Neither is as absolute as a louvre filter, but neither breaks your unlock method either.

Check the manufacturer specification. As a rule of thumb, S-series flagships have used ultrasonic readers for several generations, while A-series and budget models more often use optical under-display readers or a side-mounted sensor in the power button.
Try re-enrolling first: delete the saved fingerprints and add them again with the protector already fitted, since the sensor had memorised the reading through bare glass. If that fails, check for an air bubble over the sensor and confirm the protector uses full adhesive rather than edge-only glue.
