The camera module stands proud and is the first thing to scuff when you set the phone down on a table. A lens protector prevents that wear, but it adds one more surface between the scene and the sensor — and that shows up mostly at night.
The gain is concrete: the camera glass is one of the few parts whose replacement is not trivial, and permanent micro-scratches on the ultra-wide lens appear in every photo you take afterwards, as a diffuse veil across the bright areas.
The loss shows up in high-contrast situations. Every glass surface you add is a surface that reflects: with a streetlight, a spotlight or headlights in frame, a cheap protector produces internal reflections and haloing around the light source. In daylight you generally see nothing at all.
Flare and haloing at night. The main issue. Glass without an anti-reflective coating bounces light between its inner face and the lens, and that light returns to the sensor as a ghost. If you shoot a lot after dark, that is a serious argument against.
Interference with the flash and sensors. On some modules the flash, the LiDAR sensor or the focus sensor sit under the same piece of glass. If the protector covers them, the flash can reflect inward and wash out the entire frame. Always look for dedicated cutouts.
Trapped debris. If a speck of dust gets between the protector and the lens, it stays there and appears in every shot. Unlike the screen, you will not notice until you review the photos.
Before buying a lens protector, look at your case. Many cases include a raised lip around the camera module that holds the glass clear of the table. That solves the most common wear scenario — the phone lying flat on a hard surface — without putting anything in front of the lens.
The sensible recommendation: if your case already has that lip and you are not working around sand, construction dust or metal filings, you probably do not need a lens protector. If the phone lives in a pocket with keys or goes onto a job site, it earns its place — and there it is worth paying for one with an anti-reflective coating.
